About Google Sky

"To help you explore the far reaches of our universe, we have teamed up with astronomers at some of the largest observatories in the world to bring you a new view of the sky. Using Google Maps this tool provides an exciting way to browse and explore the universe. You can find the positions of the planets and constellations in the sky and even watch the birth of distant galaxies as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope."

Getting Started

Get started with Google Sky by opening Google Maps.

  1. Zoom out as far as you can. Until you see the whole globe.
  2. At the bottom of the screen click on the icon that says Layers and switch to Satellite mode.
  3. A side panel should emerge that has a list of the planets and some of their moons. From here you can explore space.
  4. After choosing a place in space to explore you can zoom in and explore places, craters, and mountains on the planets and moons.
