Collaboration and Teamwork in HealthcareA great resource for your pre-entry to practice Health students and practice-based health professionals.
With the University Health Network (UHN) as the lead hospital, this series of short video clips was produced by The Centre for Interprofessional Education (IPE). The Centre provides IPE opportunities to pre-entry to practice students and practice-based health professionals at affiliated hospitals and community clinical placements and aims to lead the advancement of IPE through education, practice and research initiatives.
Teamwork in health care is often referred to as Interprofessional Practice. Interprofessional practice results in the collaborative, comprehensive care that our clients/patients value and expect. These clips provide health professional students with the core competencies needed for the provision of these skills.
Emotions in ActionWell - being is a balance of the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional. This balance is enriched when individuals have purpose, hope for their future, a sense of belonging and meaning, and an understanding of how their lives are an integral part of their family and community. In Emotions in Action: Hear What They Have to Say, viewers are taken on short visual voyage into the emotional space of a small family dealing with alcoholism. The program is a conversational catalyst which helps viewers notice behavioural patterns and their associated outcomes. It serves to promote a culture of well-being in individuals, families and communities. Co-produced by the authors of the Emotional Awareness Training program and inspired by real-life events, co-producers Theresa Dunn, Psychologist and Mediator, and MC Lessard, Certified Executive Coach and Emotional Intelligence Practitioner, have created a short film that can be used as a discussion starter to build a conversation that highlights the fact that positive emotions are levers of desirable behaviour and can lead to favourable outcomes.
Homelessness: The "Housing First" ApproachThe National explores the complicated and difficult issue of homelessness in Victoria, BC. In recent years, the postcard image of this quaint seaside capital has been tarnished by increasing homelessness. Victoria's solution? To turn to Portland, Oregon for inspiration. Their mantra is "housing first". No matter how people wind up on the streets — drug addiction, mental illness, crime or bad luck — they get a home first. Then a city-wide web of support workers help them find solutions for any other issues.
Intellectual DisabilitiesThis episode from CBC's acclaimed Moving On series deals with people with intellectual disabilities. It discusses past treatment, current standards and the difficulties those with intellectual disabilities face as they age. The program features Louise, who lived for decades in the Dixville home for people with intellectual disabilities. After leaving at the age of 51, she visits schools to share her experience at Dixville with kids like Ethan, a six-year-old with Down Syndrome.
Sal's AutoA proud, veteran mechanic who owns a small-town auto repair shop, hires a quiet young man to be her apprentice. When the mechanic is shown evidence by her trusted employee that the apprentice is hiding something, she refuses to believe that she could have made a mistake. Then a sudden turn of events creates doubt and the mechanic makes an even bigger mistake that forces her to choose between serving her own pride or helping the young man. "Sal’s Auto" exposes how shame and pride causes some of us to keep secrets and others to miss subtle cries for help. The program is an excellent discussion starter that shows how people struggle with their mental health and its impact on their professional lives. The story portrays a familiar situation: What if an employee feels they cannot disclose their mental illness to their employer for fear of discrimination? Their efforts to conceal the illness can lead to complications and misunderstanding. For employers, how does one recognize the signs of an employee who needs help but is not willing to disclose. Mental health stigma - whether self-imposed or imposed by others, prevents many people from seeking help.
