Academic Honesty, Integrity & Avoiding Plagiarism

What is Academic Honesty, Integrity, and Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is defined as "the presentation of another person or source's words and/or ideas as one's own. Plagiarism ranges from an entire assignment that is not the student's own work to particular passages with an assignment taken from a source without acknowledgement" (College of the Rockies Policy #2.4.4. Student Conduct).

Plagiarism is not new; however, the use of the Internet and technologies has significantly increased the ability, opportunity, and ease to plagiarize. The phenomenon of plagiarism affects all education institutions around the world.

All members of the College community share the responsibility for maintaining a reputation for high academic standards. Academic honesty is a cornerstone in the acquisition, development and maintenance of these standards.

While studying at the College, students are expected to produce work that is original, honest, and to avoid plagiarism. The purpose of this guide is to examine the issue of academic integrity and explain what faculty can do to prevent and detect plagiarism.

Please familiarize yourself with the entire Academic Misconduct Policy.
